Takaichi creates new cabinet portfolio for 'coexistent society' with foreigners

Sanae Takaichi, Japan's first female prime minister, on Tuesday created a new cabinet portfolio for promoting an "orderly coexistent society with foreigners," appointing Kimi Onoda, a relatively young conservative lawmaker, to the post.

Onoda, 42, is also minister for economic security and the "cool Japan" strategy

On Monday, the LDP and its new partner, the Japan Innovation Party, signed a coalition agreement calling for strengthening the control tower function for foreign resident policy and establishing a ministerial post to oversee the matter.

Sharing traditional and patriotic values such as respect for the male emperor and national pride, Onoda, 42, who was born in the United States to an American father and a Japanese mother, has drawn support from conservatives.

Takaichi also brought in aides she apparently believes can advance her hawkish security and dovish fiscal policies, including ruling Liberal Democratic Party member Satsuki Katayama, who became Japan's first female finance minister.

Katayama, a fiscal dove like Takaichi, is responsible for tax policy, as public expectations mount that her government will cut levies and focus on economic growth through expanded public spending financed by debt-covering bonds.

The "regional future strategy" will be handled by consumer affairs and food security minister Hitoshi Kikawada. The "wage increase" initiative will be managed by economic policy minister Minoru Kiuchi. Both are close to Takaichi.

Takaichi selected four of the 20 lawmakers who endorsed her candidacy in the LDP presidential election on Oct 4 for her 19-member cabinet, but she appointed only two women as ministers, excluding herself, falling short of the record of five.

From other article in JapanToday, her actual position is quite long

Minister in charge of economic security, minister in charge of promoting society of well-ordered and harmonious coexistence with foreign nationals, minister for "cool Japan" strategy, minister for intellectual property strategy, minister for science and technology policy, minister for artificial intelligence strategy:

This is the second time hafu having position in cabinet, back in 2010-2011 under Prime Minister Naoto Kan,

Renhō Murata also being member cabinet. We'll see what the actual result in the future.

Tony Blair’s “Cool Britannia” led to the ruin of Britain. I hope Japan doesn’t go the way of the West.

Kimi Onoda was against long term (i.e. tax paying) residents of Japan to be eligible for the 100,000 yen handout during COVID. So yeah.... not someone non-Japanese residents want looking out for their interests. She is also 'forgot' she had dual nationality and held such long after she had to give her US citizenship up. I'm sure she remembered to do her annual US tax filing.... well at least I hope she did.... perhaps someone should look into that...

14 ( +32 / -18 )

@sakurasuki--Wikipedia states Renho uses the family name Saito after dropping Murata.

@cochise--ever watch the TV show Cool Japan where the panelists gab about any aspects of Japan the shows host chooses? It is like a polite sanitized version of the Japan Today comment section.

I don't know anything about her, but this makes me like her more.

"orderly coexistent society with foreigners,"

Code for "foreigners are inherently a problem, one that we must address."

Please check government official page too. where' the Saito part in government "official release"?

Wait, Kim Onoda... isn't that the handsome lady who proposed that foreigners, even those who pay taxes and have Japanese families, should not be eligible for hand-outs a few years back when we received the 100,000 yen hand-out.

It's the lady whose American father disappeared the moment the family arrived in Japan.

A lady with dangerous foreigners biases in charge of foreigners. This is gonna going to go great.

You are taking about a total different person ,

She isn't Rehno

Even a country such as Canada has a Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

@carpslidy,

Not sure if you replied to me, but no, I clearly remember Onoda.

She is Takaichi on steroids when it comes to foreigners lol

The decline in politicians and ministers seems extremely severe. This appears to be the case worldwide, as politicians are increasingly becoming small-time players.

LOL

@Japanbob and @Tom

I'm glad y'all both called out Onoda for her passport and past stances. I've lived in Okayama for over 25 years and she is trash, not to mention a carpetbagger (she's from Okayama, but her first elected offices were all in Tokyo). She regularly bashes foreigners on Twitter and even went so far as to say children of foreign nationals in Japan may potentially be spies. Such self-loathing.

She also commented (paraphrase), "rather than raise the number of foreigners, we have to raise the number of Japanese." Funny since she is unmarried and most likely in the closet (I have friends in that community is she is apparently a regular at some of the more off the radar establishments).

She's Just Dance Vance and Ms. Lindsey Graham all rolled into one.

I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

"Congratulations Ms Onoda, the tide is turning. I see a light at the end of the tunnel."

It's not clear what tide you are referring to, but with this bunch of tired, self-interested hacks and incompetents in cabinet, the only light I can see at the end of the tunnel is the light of an oncoming train.

Why? The sakoku policy ended in 1854.

PM needs to slow down immigrant 'spigot', immigrants from 2022 thru end of 2025, expected to grow from 2.7 to approx. 4.2M, while JN population shrinks by +1M this year and will soon, within 10 years, be +2M annually

Immigrant growth cannot continue to increase approx. 60% every 4 years, as JN population collapses, as Japan as we know it will no longer exist, controlled by radical globalists

Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu.

Please investigate why foreigners get penalized by having to pay as much as 300% of the regular hospital bills, if they do not have the national health plan.

It is preposterous and unheard of.

I paid about $900 for a simple visit.

my son paid about $2,400 in Ginza,(not sure why he went there).

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

I believe this one said something to the tune of "We must increase the number of Japanese". Last I heard, she has even given this society one. But who knows. Maybe she'll get these Japanese women to work making babies. It's a win-win.

Unfortunately for Onoda, she's going to discover real quick that the DNA results may not be what she intended for. Japanese women do what they want.

" Tony Blair’s “Cool Britannia” led to the ruin of Britain. I hope Japan doesn’t go the way of the West. "

What are you talking about? Cool Britannia was amazing after years of awful Tory rule. We had just been awarded the Olympics and London was buzzing.

Superb music and films, it was a massive celebration of UK culture.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

They might crack down harder on those born with (and quietly maintaining) dual citizenship. There may be as many as a million in Japan. But renouncing citizenship of a country can be very expensive (not to mention psychologically painful). The USA now charges an application fee of $2,350. This is non-refundable, even if the request is denied.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Let's see. Onoda was born in 1982. She officially renounced her US citizenship in 2017, when she was 35.

She was breaking Japanese law for 13 years as 2004 was when the law officially prohibiting dual nationality was established.

I wonder if she was filing US taxes and FBAR reports for the 17 years when she was 18 - 35, as is a legal requirement for all US citizens (which she legally was at that time - she had renewed her passport multiple times).

Seems to me she has broken the law in two different countries. Is that who should be lecturing about the law?

Also, the LDP politicians in Okayama are very hypocritical. Okayama has a very large zainichi Korean population, especially in and around Kurashiki. Over 50,000 (though only 3,000 or so "special permanent residents"). I know because I have done a lot of research in the community. Our main LDP bigwig, Ichiro Ozawa, regularly appears at Korean events such as cultural festivals. I've even met him at the zainich jr high graduation ceremony. He'll take their money and their votes and I'm sure she will too.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Day 1, only, the Nordic's gender aspiration/promise is already gone/forgotten/etc. Says a lot of these politicians honesty/integrity/character.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

"orderly coexistent society with foreigners,"

This premise itself is already derogative, drawing the line between "us the Japanese" and "them, the foreigners". They cling to the xenophobic idea that Japan=Japanese.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Sorry, that should be Ichiro Aizawa in Okayama, not Ichiro Ozawa.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

900 dollars for a simple visit. Impossible in a Japanese hospital. What was the content ?

The regular hospital bill is 30% of the total. So your 300% were maybe three times of the 30%, ie actually the total bill corresponding to 100% of the cost.

Was your hospital a private one for foreigners or vips ?

Tony Blair’s “Cool Britannia” led to the ruin of Britain. I hope Japan doesn’t go the way of the West.

oh pleeeeeeease! You’re actually blaming Blair, and not say Thatcher, Cameron, May,Johnson, Trust and the near 15 years of austerity and a financial crash caused by the U.S. sub prime market.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

For Japan to be great again, NOT endless cheap immigrants, creating race to the bottom for wages, destroying demographics, rather private sector led innovation and wealth creation, reducing wasteful Govt.

Co-existence with foreigners is just laughable

Is Japan gonna tell the American military to leave? It's a dog and pony show for the domestic audience as every one knows Japan has no teeth when it comes to foreigners

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

DeeZee Today 01:27 pm JST

Is Japan gonna tell the American military to leave?

Apples and oranges. Talking about illegal and trouble-making foreigners, not the military. The American military does punish its servicemen when they err. Unlike the trouble-making foreigners who often run off back to their countries like cowards.

You are wumao? Your number one priority seems to be to get the American military to leave.

It's a dog and pony show for the domestic audience as every one knows Japan has no teeth when it comes to foreigners.

Then Onoda's and Takaichi's teeth are just what we need now. Their fangs and claws are growing and getting sharper. And trouble making foreigners and those who exploit the Japanese system for their own benefit....are the prey.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Co-exist is a rather inappropriate term. Society is supposed to be about integration, not simply co-existing, which sounds so transactional and superficial.

Real question, why are foreigners so hesitant to integrate into Japan and part of the reason lies in this mindset of 'co-existence', which really means separate and not equal, but also ongoing structural failures of Japan, hardly an 'attractive' platform in which to integrate into...

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Tony Blair’s “Cool Britannia” led to the ruin of Britain. I hope Japan doesn’t go the way of the West.

Britain may be ruined and Tony Blair may have a large responsibility for it, but a cultural renaissance had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Basically it was Tony Blair acting as what Margaret Thatcher called "my greatest achievement". Another person who sold the country down the river and, by doing it from the center-right instead of the right, cemented British politics around pandering to the US and to financial interests.

fwiw, I prefer Slade to Oasis and the Kinks to Blur.

Koizumi ,the perennial chocolate teapot, would actually suit this position.

Afraid you're correct, at least Koizumi married a girl with a French Dad, who I know via a tennis circle, so he's got real street credentials as someone with empathy etc.

Takaishi appears ethically challenged, starting with her marriage to a family man, now she's using terms like 'co-exist'...talk about terrible PM Takaishi first impressions...seems she's not going to last long either

Quoting because such a good comment!

Anyone who was against lawful tax payers getting their rightful covid financial help is insane. Understanding the chip on her shoulder comments. Two-faced, literally.

Co-exist statement is about dealing with the current immigrant news, often Asian or SE Asian demographic, stop importing cheap labor from countries with low morals (or at least the ones that’ll often take such jobs or the travelling criminals). Used to think of the Brazilians as the Mexicans of Japan (from US perspective) many don’t integrate but they work hard, abide by the laws, and have familial connections to Japan.

Hopefully she’s hinting at the working visas system, learn from the mistakes and attempt improvements.
